This is a composite of about 50 images.
~mnemosyneforgot is lit by a shoot-through umbrella w/ CTO gel to the left, and a bare flash held by ~ceraceratopian on the right. Since the flashes were in the frame, I took a separate picture of just the background with the equipment out of the way.
For the feathers... there's probably a brush for this, but I took pictures of feathers blown in the air by a fan. I didn't have suitable white feathers, only black ones. So, I shot them against a white flash-illuminated background, then inverted the colors. Many, many sets of feather images were combined to make the swirl.
