Berlin at the end of the War....
"Oh, to sleep...to forget; and never to wake. Never again to know that once upon a time, in this wretched world, for a brief short time, out of the slime of mediocrity and dull humanity, a divine nation had arisen, at the call of her Leader, and believing in their own invincibility they lived and toiled and sang in youthful joy and glory for six great years. And then, after the stupid fury of that mean and jealous world, for another six years they fought and resisted. Oh, to sleep...to forget; never again to know of what we had lost. And many of us HAVE gone to sleep with the decision to not awake again, with the help of that slender glass capsule. And that is their Destiny. We each have our Destiny. For many of us our Destiny is to keep on going in this world. And to know that one day...one year...one decade...we shall return."
From the diary of a woman in Berlin
