As you have probably guessed this photograph was also taken in Havana!
Actually I was looking through my dad's photos and whilst I was looking at this I thought of something...
This photograph reminded me of when as a little child I used to live in Poland, and how me and my Grandad would make little people and animals, from matchsticks and previously collected acorns and chestnuts. Autumn was basically a time of collection and creativity, followed by Christmas. I'm sure you can imagine my joy as a child!
Of course the girl on the photograph is playing with an old car top, which is somewhat different from what I've been doing as a child, but truth be told this simple car top is a fortress for dragons and fairies; a palace of an ancient princess, a hideout for Native Americans... It's that amazing childlike creativity that can give birth to amazing things.
I feel like this kind of creativity should be preserved, along with the inner child, throughout life.
I don't know how children are now in Poland, or anywhere else for that matter, but from my experience in England (not talking about every single person of course) I don't think that any child does the sort of stuff. Or at the very least I haven't seen a child who's make handmade toys from natural resources or lost and found. Or at the very least it's not very popular. And I think there are two reasons for this:
1. Health and Safety. Media feed people to think that 'official' toys are safer etc.
2. Who wants a toy made out of random seeds?
Of course there is always more reasoning behind things and as I said I have no idea in general how things are nowadays with kids of the age I was then, but I do feel like these two tend to happen and children themselves lose their creativity and turn to much cooler and expensive goods. I feel like too often technology and high price take up the space of things created from the heart.
Handmade things, wheaver out of poverty, pure imagination or fun, are one of the most beautiful things that can be made.
So if you're a parent, and older sibling or just know a kid, go make them some cool toys with things that Mother Earth gave to us
Have fun!
