Northern Soul
Three of a kind 4
Another trio of aircraft that share a connection with each other. Well in fact these three machines could be said to share multiple connections. They are all aircraft that are of British design, and all served the Royal Flying Corps. They all were scout aircraft that of course originate from the Great War Period, and all are operated by the Shuttleworth Collection and based at Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire, UK. However these are just a tad too obvious to be the reason I have put these three together.
The connection I wanted to talk about is less about the aircraft themselves and much more to do with how they were built. You see, these machines are all reproductions. However, unlike many reproductions and replicas built in the post war years, these were special. The Shuttleworth Collection utilised the services of a little known organisation based in Yorkshire known as the Northern Aeroplane Workshop, that were formed specifically to build aircraft for the collection. During a forty year period, they researched and constructed all three of these machines with original plans and techniques. They are one hundred percent faithful, even utilising the correct powerplants. In the case of the Sopwith Triplane, which was the first to be built. This aircraft was inspected during her construction by no other than the type's designer, Tommy Sopwith himself. He proclaimed that it was so authentic to the original that it should not be considered a reproduction, calling it a "Late Production" instead. Quite the validation for those working on them.
Sadly with the completion of the Sopwith Camel a few years back, the organisation have called it a day. However, in the intervening years there has been a resurgence of interest in Great War and Edwardian aircraft and now several organisations are doing equally great work to put some extinct types back in the skies. But it is worth saluting the Northern Aeroplane Workshop for pioneering the preservation movement for this period. The aircraft that can now all be seen flying regularly at Shuttleworth shows are testament to the great work they did.

Little Hyena
A young spotted hyena at the Denver Zoo.
spotted hyenas are one of my favorite animals, maybe my second favorite African predator just behind the painted dogs.
I have a serious soft spot for all the misunderstood critters. Hyenas get a super bad reputation in-favor of other charismatic predators. And we're still learning so much about their social structure.

Secretary Floof
Secretary bird at the Denver zoo at the end of a rouse.
I think Denver and San Diego are the only places that I've seen these birds. The Safari Park even has one (or maybe two) of them in their bird show, and they are VERY impressive birds with their hunting technique.
